2019 AGM
President’s Report

Welcome to the 2019 President’s Report for the Wanganui Amateur Radio Society Inc.

Yet another year has passed, so what did we achieve in the past 12 months?

In December 2018 we held our Christmas function at my QTH. Another enjoyable afternoon. There were opportunities to play with some digial radios, hotspots etc., thanks to Warren, ZL2JML.

Through out the year we made several trips to Maewa, two of which were to replace our 690 repeater with a newer one. Unfortunately the first attempt failed, but the second was successful. Now the new repeater is up and running has has been functioning well. It has been disapointing that the timeout that was programmed into the repeater, has caused some unrest among members of the club. The issue has been noted and we will endeavour to get this resolved. In other news, at Maewa, Power Co have installed a generator at that location, so now if the power fails, our batteries will take over while the generator comes online, so our repeater should never go offline in the event of a prolonged power outage.

Last year we installed a WiFi antenna at Maewa and this year we installed an antenna in Whanganui to provide connectivity to the internet. Unfortunately, either due to some light fingers or strong winds, the antenna in Whanganui has disappeared. We are investigating.

Another major project this year has been the installation of a link site at Kaharoa Road. This has involved a few members; John ZL2JEL, Laurie ZL2TC and Terry ZL2EI, they have made multiple trips to the site as well as building and testing the equipment to be installed. We are now very close to getting the link live.

Branch 20 has been very active again this year, running a Ham Cram as well as other technical classes. A number of our members have also joined branch 20 and are actively taking part in their activities. I think Branch 48 needs to do more activities locally. Thanks to Warren ZL2JML for his work in keeping ties with Branch 20.

There was a trip organised to the Waverly Museum, a number of Branch 48 members took part in this visit to the private museum.

During the year we welcomed four new members; John Ridge ZL2CAT, Stewart Neal ZL1TCG, Noel Jardins VK4NL, Ken Carlyle ZL2KRC.

So that about wraps up my report for this year. I know I have not been as present as perhaps I should, being overseas does make it hard to keep on track in the ham radio world.

I wish you all, all the best for the coming year. Happy Hamming.

73 Mike Price ZL2MCP President
